OBE News and Upcoming Events... About the Out of Bounds Ensemble...The Out of Bounds Ensemble was founded in 2007 in order to bring new and established contemporary chamber music to a wider audience. Pianist and theorist Tomoko Deguchi, building on years of experience performing contemporary music, forged the ensemble by bringing together composers Ronald Keith Parks and Craig Bove, pianist and composer Leonard Mark Lewis, and conductor and tuba player Geoff Whitehead. Soon after becoming established in the Carolina region the Out of Bounds Ensemble was appointed as Ensemble in Residence at Winthrop University, Rock Hill, SC and Central Piedmont Community College, Charlotte, NC. Since its inception the Out of Bounds Ensemble has been joined in concert by numerous eminent Charlotte, NC area musicians including flutist Amy Orsinger-Whitehead, clarinetist Reese Manceaux, cellist Nick Lampo, violinist Judy Meister, soprano Loraine Gorrell, Brass Act (Jon Thornton and Scott Bauer - trumpet, Julie Shrom - horn, Ken Davis - trombone, and David Mills - tuba), trumpeters Mark Dulin, David Hodges, and John Brooks, French horn Bill Tyler, trombonist Mark Richards, tuba player Sarita J. Maxwell, soprano Kristen Wonderlich, flutist Jill O'Neill, oboe player Brendon Bushman, violinist Tatiana Karpova, soprano Gina Gutierrez, and many more. The mission of the Out of Bounds Ensemble is to present professional-quality performances of established, seminal works of the 20th and 21st centuries and to commission and perform new works by regional composers. The Out of Bounds Ensemble is available for concerts and lecture-recitals, and makes regular appearances in the Carolinas and throughout the southeast region. The OBE spring 2012 concerts were a huge success. Audience numbers and excitement continues to increase with each concert. The spring 2012 concert included... Archipel for oboe, violin, and cello Christopher Stark Letter to the World, Solitude, and Summer Sun Leonard Mark Lewis Seven Epitaphs for voice, horn, cello, and piano Bruce A. Thompson Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 67 Shostakovich The Out of Bounds Ensemble presented a concert as part of the 4th Annual Kentucky New Music Festival at the University of Kentucky, Lexington KY on October 23, 2010. The concert featured works by Villa Lobos, Heinz Schreitner, George Crumb, and a world premiere of a new work by Ronald Keith Parks. OBE core members were joined by flutist Jill O'Neill and horn player Bill Tyler for this concert. This special event was sponsored by the Central Kentucky Student Chapter of the Society of Composers, Inc. The Out of Bounds Ensemble recently performed two back-to-back concerts of works by the OBE student composition contest winners. The first concert took place at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC and the second at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC Congratulations to the winners! Portrait of a Broken Mind - Michael Dropps Primeiro Trio - Rafael Valle Saxocaphony: Sonata for Saxophone and Piano No. 1 - Adam Sovkoplas Scherzofrenetic for Bb trumpet and piano - Sara Hersh Level 3 - In Flight - Hanna Lisa Stefanson In addition to the works selected for performance, Cache Cache (hide and seek) - Yunkyung Hong was selected for an OBE artistic merit award and will be retained by OBE for performance consideration on a future OBE concert. The adjudicators and the OBE board of directors were impressed with the high quality of the submissions. We had a difficult time reaching our decisions. We received numerous high quality submissions and it is apparent to us that the future of new music is in good hands. We wish to thank our adjudicators and everyone who took the time and effort to submit works for consideration. Thank you for sharing your music with us.
The Out of Bounds Ensemble completed a grant-funded residency at Winthrop University in fall 2009. During their time at Winthrop the ensemble members held instrumental and composition master classes, read student works, conducted a music business seminar, and presented a performance of works by Crumb - Voice of the Whale, Ives - Largo for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano, and Schoenberg - Pierrot Lunaire Book 2. The Out of Bounds Ensemble presented two concerts in the Charlotte area in April, 2009. The Out of Bounds Ensemble was featured on Central Piedmont Community College online TV program Charlotte Arts.
